Profile

Experience, reflect, change – studying social work dual-digitally

The dual-digital bachelor's degree programme in Social Work is structured in the weekly model "3 days teaching and 2 days practice". Parallel to the basic studies, you will continuously gain experience in your practical placement two days a week and deepen your knowledge in one of the two study tracks "Youth Services-School-Community" or "Social Services of Public and Independent Organisations". You will receive a monthly financial allowance.

You will be accompanied in your professional development by fixed contact persons from the university and the practice centre. Teaching in this degree programme takes place both in presence and digitally. A central instrument is the development of a Mahara ePortfolio to accompany your studies. In addition, the programme promotes digital competences in the context of social work – in the course of studies and for practice on site.

Family support workers assist families, children and young people in overcoming problems, e.g. school problems, addiction, violence or conflicts with the law. They provide advice and support in developing a functioning coexistence, in debt settlement, in household matters and in leisure activities. They also promote kinship and neighbourhood support and accompany young people in living arrangements outside the family.

The Youth Welfare Office is a municipal institution where social workers and administrative staff work together. They inform young families about support services, ensure there are enough nurseries and childminders, and are involved in urban planning. They help young people enter the world of work and deal with criminal law issues. They support parents with concerns and problems involving their children, find foster families or children's homes when necessary, and investigate reports of children suffering in their families. They also help to arrange custody agreements in cases of separation and support unmarried mothers in establishing paternity. In cases of adoption, they search for suitable adoptive parents.

Conflicts arise time and again in social work. Mediators help to find win-win solutions. During their studies, students learn to reflect on how they deal with conflicts, acquire basic knowledge of conflict theory and try out various mediation techniques. This enables them to apply elements of mediation in their everyday working lives and deal with conflicts professionally.

School social work promotes the development of young people and offers advice and support to pupils, parents and teachers. It deals with problems at school and at home and has become increasingly important in recent years. It includes leisure and educational activities, crisis intervention, referrals to services and advice centres, and supports young people and their parents during transitions.

Neighbourhood and community work is a form of professional social work that focuses on problem areas in order to improve the living conditions of residents. It encourages residents to take responsibility for their environment and represents their interests when necessary. Methods include neighbourhood festivals, discussion groups, counselling and media work. The aim is to improve the image of the neighbourhood and resolve conflicts. The work also includes counselling and mediation activities as well as working with groups.
