Further Training Opportunities at the Department of Information Sciences

Since 1999, the Department of Information Sciences has been offering continuing professional development courses for staff in all areas of archiving through the ‘Archives Distance Learning’ project.

Course format: Certificate course with the option of progression to the direct-entry Archival Studies (BA) degree programme

Target group: Staff from all areas of archiving with relevant professional training

Following an initial attempt to offer an integrated programme, a course specifically designed for archivists was developed – under the Head of Academic Affairs, Prof. Susanne Freund – as an equivalent to the long-standing and successful certificate course in library management.

Training format: Certificate course

Target group: Staff working in archives or related institutions

A degree programme that enables students to gain advanced specialist qualifications in archiving. Designed to complement in-house archival training within the public administration in Germany. 

Format: Part-time studyalongside work

Target group: Archivestaff who have already obtained a university degree in a subject other than archiving

The continuing professional development programme provides individuals working in archives without specialist qualifications with the knowledge and skills equivalent to those acquired through training as a Media and Information Services Specialist (FaMI), specialising in archives.

Training format: Seminar

Target group: Archivestaff with vocational training qualifications

This further training course provides fundamental knowledge and practical skills in business archiving, with modules on the preservation of records and the legal principles governing archiving. 

Course format: Seminar

Target audience: Newcomers to business archives with a background in history or archival studies but without a specialisation in business, and career changers with a background in a different field

The seminar provides an insight into the structures and working practices of archival institutions and covers the basic concepts involved in organising an archive and conducting targeted research.

Target audience: Researchers , students and other interested parties with no prior knowledge of archiving
