FAQ on recognition and crediting

The FAQ section provides answers to frequently asked questions on the topics of recognition and credit transfer.

For detailed information and answers to specific questions, please visit the web pages on recognition and recognition.

Recognition refers to competences, qualifications or achievements gained at universities. These are recognised with the aim of continuing studies in another degree programme or at another university.

Recognition refers to competences and qualifications acquired outside of higher education institutions, for example in vocational or informal educational contexts. These are recognised with the aim of not having to repeat competences already acquired and, if necessary, to shorten study periods in a quality-assured and meaningful way.

Skipping modules: Through recognition or credit transfer, certain courses or modules can be omitted so that you have more freedom in planning your studies or can switch to advanced courses more quickly, for example.

Flexibility in the course of study: Recognition or accreditation gives you the opportunity to personalise your course of study so that you can concentrate on new learning content or acquire additional qualifications.

No. All students enrolled at the FH Potsdam can apply for recognition and/or credit transfer at any time. It is advisable to submit the applications directly at the beginning of the degree programme in order to optimally plan the course of study.

Grades are accepted if the grading systems are comparable. In the case of non-comparable grading systems, recognition or crediting takes place without a grade and the note "passed" is entered.

Ungraded work can be recognised or credited without a grade, even if grading is provided for in the module. The grades provided for this are removed from the overall grade calculation. In exceptional cases, the examination boards can develop individual solutions (e.g. additional technical discussion or subsequent grading).

No. If it can be proven that you have the required competences or achievements at the time of application, it is generally irrelevant when you acquired them. Even if the competences were acquired a long time ago, this is not a sufficient basis for a negative decision. If there is no significant difference or the content and level of the existing and required competences match, competences can be recognised or credited throughout your life.

If you have already started the examination procedure in the relevant module or have definitively failed an examination, it is no longer possible for this module to be credited or recognised (cf. §15 Para. 3 No. 2 BbgHG).

This also applies if you have failed an essentially identical module at another university or in another subject.

Processing can take up to 8 weeks depending on the scope of the modules applied for. You will be informed of the decision on your application in writing.

You will receive a notification from the Examination Service informing you whether and how your achievements or competences have been recognised or credited for each module you have applied for.

Recognition or crediting is an administrative procedure with legal recourse. This means that in the event of a partial or complete rejection, you are entitled to a statement of reasons and can appeal against the decision. You can lodge an appeal in writing to the Examination Service within four weeks of receiving the decision.

Yes, recognised study and examination achievements and recognised competences achieved outside the FH Potsdam are marked on the degree certificate.
