Standard Moodle Course Template

The Standard Moodle course template is available to teachers at the FHP to support them in creating Moodle courses for face-to-face events. The course templates can be downloaded in a demo course as an mbz file (Open Educational Resources) and customised.

What to expect in the demo course

You can try out and download a course template in the Moodle course.

The target group are professors, lecturers and teaching assistants who would like to use the course primarily for the provision of materials. The course template is already designed for one semester and only needs to be filled in.

The course can also be used to

  • Enrolment in the course,
  • communicate with the students,
  • organisational matters can be dealt with,
  • provide important links,
  • provide access to important tools such as the Zoom online conference system and
  • course evaluation.

The ocampus transfer platform is also accessible to external users once an account has been set up. To enrol in the course, simply click on the link to the demo course after registering.

The course templates can be used as OER-material with a Creative Commons licence.

General information

  • The course templates have been designed with a strong focus on the user experience. Teachers, students, and staff from digital teaching support services were involved in their development.
  • The course templates were developed specifically for use in university teaching during the semester. This makes it easier for teachers to create materials. They can focus more on the content, as the course template provides structure and barrier-free design.
  • The course template makes it easier for teachers and students to get started in Moodle and find their way around a course. Because the content is structured similarly in different courses, students can concentrate more on the content while learning.
  • The course template facilitates orientation in the course through the use of symbols that are as uniform as possible, the meanings of which are defined across disciplines in the demo course in a code snippet collection for icons.
  • The course templates are designed according to the principles of robustness, interoperability, mobility, and accessibility. They are very small in size (less than 15 MB) and therefore run very efficiently on different systems. Even with low or only temporarily available data volume, the course content can be used by downloading it in the form of books, directories, and videos, for example.
  • If data-intensive content such as photos, videos, and interactive materials are primarily stored at the book level, this increases the performance of the course and the entire Moodle platform. These are then loaded when they are specifically needed.
  • The use of Font Awesome icons via HTML code also makes it possible to create very lean and high-performance courses. The courses load relatively quickly from the Internet. The images can be easily replaced using HTML code. No editing with a graphics program is necessary. In terms of sustainability, this conserves resources.
  • Careers at universities are characterized by a high degree of mobility. The Boost Union version can be easily transferred by teachers to another university in the DACH region and is executable there. In principle, the OER version can be easily used on any Moodle instance worldwide.
  • The course templates are suitable for international collaborations. Content can be easily exchanged and translated on a book-by-book basis.
  • The course templates are structured in a modular way into lessons. This makes it easier to reuse individual lessons in different degree programs and modules. It also facilitates the exchange and adaptation of knowledge in collaborations with other universities.
  • The course templates were created as OER materials, making them easy to reuse.
