Voices from the degree programme
  • I particularly liked the practical relevance of the bachelor's degree programme in Childhood Education at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam. We were able to get a taste of different specialisations and find out which area we would like to work in after graduation. I also found the variety of topics on the programme particularly exciting - from developmental psychology to creative educational processes.

    Wilma, 22
Start Education in Childhood 2022 (B.A.), graduation 2025
  • "Our job is not to tell children what to be but to show them the possibilities of being".
    - Horatio Clare

The BABEK degree programme [from 2026: "Childhood Education"] at the FHP shows how we can accompany children in their individual development in a sensitive, trusting, creative and empathetic way. We have learnt to understand the inner processes of a child and to support the various phases of child development on this basis.

It has also become clear how important it is to reflect and supervise with other students. Sharing ideas in a group opens up new perspectives and helps you to go beyond your own horizons. Educational work also benefits from this experience, because every child is individual and can show the most diverse facets of themselves and lead us professionals to new views and possibilities.

Childhood education therefore means learning from and with children, but also giving them a secure basis so that they can develop freely.

    Annika, 21
Start Education in Childhood 2022 (BA), graduation 2026
  • I gained a lot of practical experience during my studies, which gave me a great deal of insight into different organisations. As a result, I was able to gain a lot of experience with children, so that they could be seen and not overlooked.

    Floriane
Graduate in Education and Childhood Education (B.A.)
  • There are a lot of Childhood educators currently on the educator market. But childhood educators can also do much more. They can work in an advisory capacity. They can be the interface between practice and research. They can work as neighbourhood daycare specialists or in daycare social work.

    Patrick
    Graduate in Childhood Education (BA)
  • What also what makes this degree programme special for me: That it's not just about content, but also about yourself as a person and that you simply learn with and from each other and also quite a lot about yourself in the process.

    Elena

Semester and module overview full-time and part-time

The standard period of study, including the integrated practical study phases and the final thesis, is 6 semesters for full-time study and 12 semesters for part-time study. part-time study semesters are counted as half semesters and as full university semesters.

The change between full-time and part-time study can be made on application at the beginning of each winter semester and is valid for at least one academic year. Once the application for admission to the final thesis has been submitted, it is no longer possible to change the type of study programme.

The following full-time and part-time semester models provide an overall view of all modules in the degree programme.

Recognition of competences acquired outside the university

Here you will find questions and answers on the recognition of competences acquired outside of higher education.

You can have formally acquired skills (e.g. in vocational training), non-formally acquired skills (e.g. through further education and training) and informally acquired skills (e.g. through voluntary work) recognised. All information on this can be found here.

For the recognition of competences acquired outside of higher education, always submit the form "Recognition of competences acquired outside of higher education", the "Supplementary sheet for the recognition of educator training" and the relevant supporting documents.

The form "Supplementary sheet for the crediting of educator training" serves as an aid when applying for the "Crediting of competences acquired outside of higher education". This form must be completed in full.

You can find the documents on the MyCampus homepage under "Information from the Department of "Examination Services".

  1. General information and counselling by the head of degree programme (possibly supplemented by the central student advisory service).
  2. Application by students using the two forms "Recognition of competences acquired outside of higher education" and the "Supplementary sheet for the recognition of educator training".
  3. You submit the documents to the Examination Service by email: pruefungs-service@fh-potsdam.de.
  4. Examination by the Examination Service, the Examination Board and the head of degree programme.
  5. Notification and feedback to the students by the Examination Service.

No, this is not possible. However, you can significantly shorten your period of study by having it recognised.

No, this is not possible. You can only submit the application once you are enrolled at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam.

We recommend that you submit an application for the entire degree programme at the beginning of your studies. If you are already studying, it is possible to submit an application, but not retroactively.

If it is documented in your final certificate of teacher training where you completed your internships (e.g. day care, after-school care centre), the certificate is sufficient. Otherwise, please submit alternative evidence.

Yes, the grades or the "passed" if there is no grade will be taken from your training certificate.

Frequently asked questions about the bachelor's degree programme in Childhood Education

You can apply for standardised crediting of the Brandenburg and Berlin nursery teacher training. Educator training from other federal states can be recognised individually. Other previous experience (e.g. achievements at a university, adult education courses, further education and training or professional experience) can be assessed on an individual basis.

Applications are submitted via the Examination Service. If you have already completed related coursework at a university, please contact the degree programme advisory service at an early stage to apply for a placement.

In the application process, you can increase your chances of a place on a degree programme with professional and non-professional experience. Voluntary service is taken into account here. You can find a complete list in the selection regulations. Unfortunately, however, you cannot be exempted from academic achievements.

If you are studying full-time, you can work up to 20 hours a week during the lecture period. However, earning too much can affect your BAföG entitlement. There are different regulations outside the lecture period. Please contact your health insurance provider for more information.

No, there is no practical semester. During your degree programme, you must provide evidence of a total of 800 hours of practical experience. You do not need an internship to start your degree programme. You will receive all the relevant information about internships in the first week of lectures.

With us, you have the opportunity to complete a semester abroad and internships abroad without having to extend your studies.

Our special certificate programme "Childhood Education International" enables you to take part in language and preparatory courses for your stay abroad as well as a seminar on international quality development and professionalisation.

Further information is available in the study information letters sent out at the start of each semester, from the contact persons in the Department of Social and Educational Sciences and on the International Office website.
