Master of Arts: Childhood Studies and Children's Rights

The core element of the M.A. Childhood Studies and Children’s Rights is the active and effective participation of children (and young people) in social processes. The understanding of Childhood(s) as a social, historically changeable phenomenon and of children as social subjects who are to be respected as such, with own views, interests and competences is the basis. Special emphasis lies on an understanding of children’s rights as socially and culturally contextualised subjective rights.

  • Course length: 3 semsters (1 1/2 years);7 modules and M.A. thesis
  • Amount of credit points to be gained: 90 ECTS
  • Integrated internship or practical project respectively.
  • There is also the option to write a theoretical research proposal (240h duration)

Language of instruction: English

Generally, all seminars, tutorials, lectures in the M.A. Childhood Studies and Children’s Rights are held in English; exceptionally, it is possible that German speaking guest lecturers are invited. The used sources (literature, reports, testimonials, conventions and declarations) are almost 100% English- however we do encourage considering and using sources in other languages, particularly from the regions the students come from.

Blended Learning

In addition to the face-face classes, the M.A. Childhood Studies and Children’s Rights uses the online learning platform Moodle.


The aim of the M.A. Childhood Studies and Children’s Rights is to convey the students the required competences for children, youth and children’s rights work. Also, the students will attain competencies to use Scientific methods and skills, as well as professional capacities in numerous children’s rights relevant work fields (Social Work, Social Pedagogy, Law, Politics, Media a.o.)

Admission Criteria

  • Interest to contribute to the implementation of children's rights in different work areas
  • Generally, 1 year work experience after having graduated from your first studies in an area related to children, youth, children’s rights. E.g. in child and youth welfare, education, social services, health, law, development cooperation, politics, media.
  • Proof of English knowledge (e.g. work/ study/ internship experiences in an English speaking country; native speaker; the language of instruction in previous studies program was English)


Tuition fees: 5.965€ for the complete program. Generally they have to be fully paid during the enrolment period before the beginning of the program. In exceptional cases payment in instalments can be arranged upon application. Additionally, administrative University fees per semester including public transportation in the county Brandenburg and Berlin (Potsdam is the capital of Brandenburg and is located in the South West of Berlin).

The perspectives and possibilities for work in the area of children and young people’s rights is manifold and diverse:

Traditional working areas are child and youth welfare, social services, urban planning, public services as well as welfare and youth associations (NGOs).

Graduates of social work, early childhood education as well as teacher’s education can extend and prime their profile, in particular in view of conflict management and resolution, mediation, prevention of violence, promotion of migrant- and refugee children etc.  Another work field is social work at school as well as school psychology and in the frame of day care- this in particular with the increasing number of whole day schools (Ganztagsschulen) in Germany.

A large range of working fields are offered by international organizations such as UNICEF, UNESCO, UNHCR as well as internationally working organizations in development cooperation in particular those promoting children, young people and families, e.g. Save the Children; terre des hommes; World Vision, Plan international etc.

Due to the mainstreaming of children’s rights in various and diverse surroundings and areas, new professions and work fields are opening up. Firstly, the position of children’s ombudsperson should be named. Children ombudspersons are very scarce in Germany- only few local communities and one Bundesland (Sachsen-Anhalt) have such a position. The M.A. Childhood Studies and Children’s Rights is contributing to the establishment of children’s ombudspersons in all municipalities and regions in Germany (other countries are better situated in this area already, however it is not only the positions but also the equipment and facilities available to the ombudspersons which the MACR is aiming at contributing to.

Another German (and Austrian) field of work is the position of the “Verfahrensbeistand” (guardian in juridical procedures- child lawyer). For graduates of law the M.A. Childhood Studies and Children’s Rights imparts qualification and competencies in the realm of youth and family courts.

Journalists obtain qualifications to sharpen their profile and extend their professional offers. It can be observed that- e.g. in independent associations- there are increasing numbers of jobs for communication tasks in the field of human and children’s rights protection.

Classes (seminars, tutorials and colloquia) take place on Thursday late afternoons (4pm-8pm) and in full day blocks on Friday and Saturday (9am-6pm).

Why study the M.A. Childhood Studies and Children’s Rights?

Children are the future but also the present, they must be respected as social subjects with own views, ideas and feelings. Children should have the possibility to play an active and responsible role in their environments.

Therefore it is necessary to protect their rights and to ensure their full implementation.

If children’s rights are to be implemented, this world will be a different one.

Studying the MACR will enable you to contribute to making this a reality.

What are possible fields of work for the graduates?

Successful graduation prepares you to take on leading positions in the following areas (a.o.):

  • social affairs ministries, communal administrations
  • journalism
  • social economy

Nowadays, society demands more and more independent children’s ombudsmen and representatives. The qualification and knowledge gained in the M.A. Childhood Studies and Children's Rights are the basis for this field of activity.

  • UNHCR Child Protection Manager in Uganda;
  • School director of a reform high school.
  • Children’s Ombudsman of a Child and Youth welfare institution
  • Office director of the minister for work and social affairs in Brandenburg
  • Speaker of the federal direction of the German Scouts organisation
  • Researcher and project coordinator at the German Institute of Human Rights
  • Programme director “ a chance to play-o direito de brincar“ based in São Paulo (Brazil), terre des hommes Germany
  • Speaker of the  Kenniscentrum Kinderrechten (Children's Rights Knowledge Centre, KeKi) in Ghent, Belgium;
  • Director of the international program section at Save the Children, Germany;

  • Director of the Observatory on institutions of delinquent youth in Paraguay.

Some graduates have dedicated themselves to further academic studies (PhD) in Germany and Europe, e.g. on themes such as „FGM und Human Rights Education“ or "Rights-based approach to social justice. Agricultural bonded labour in India and Nepal" or „Developing a Children’s Rights Module for Teacher Education”.

When will the Master start and how long does it last?

The M.A. Childhood Studies and Children’s Rights was launched for the first time in October 2007. Originally the program was called: European Master in Children's Rights (EMCR).

Student intake and enrolment is annually for the Winter Semester (courses begin in October). The Master lasts 3 semesters (1,5 years)

What subject must I have studied to be eligible for the MACR?

The M.A. Childhood Studies and Children's Rights is directed to everybody interested in working for and with children and their rights and in particular to:

  • Graduates of social sciences, law, education, social work and graduates of other disciplines with first professional experiences in working with and for children and/or young people.
  • Professionals in governmental and non-governmental institutions and organisations in the field of youth work, education, social services, health and law with a first academic degree (BA, equivalent or higher).

What are the admission criteria/ entrance requirements?

In order to commence your studies at University of Applied Sciences in Potsdam, you have to fulfill the following entry requirements:

  • Interest to contribute to the implementation of children's rights in different work areas
  • A bachelor’s degree (BA) or equivalent academic degree.
  • Transcript of Records
  • Approx. 1 year work experience, after finishing an undergraduate degree (B.A. or similar), in the area of child and youth work, education, social services, health, law, media, international development cooperation or similar areas.
  • Knowledge of English (Level: min. C1; see also language requirements below)
  • Submission of the application documents. More information on the application process is to be found here.

In case there are study places open, persons with 1 year work experience in the above-mentioned areas who do not have an academic degree may study the program, however they will not be awarded an official M.A. degree. A certificate can be issued to these students.

What are the language requirements?

Lectures and seminars are offered in English. Candidates whose first language is not English, and the first university degree was not earned in English, have to confirm their English language skills (e.g. work/ study/ internship experiences in an English speaking country; native speaker; language of instruction of previous study program was English). We recommend english language skills on level C1.

Spanish knowledge is an asset, as some literature and sources are available only in Spanish (this is not a formal requirement).

What kind of working experience do I need to have to apply?

With your application you need prove your working experience. You need to have worked for at least one year after finishing your undergraduate degree (B.A. or similar). Your working experience should fit our master program: e.g. child and youth work, education, social services, health, law, media, international development cooperation or similar areas.

When submitting proof of your working experience, you do not need to be in a permanent position. We also accept internships, voluntary services and community services. Please be advised that you have to prove your working experience (contract of employment, letter of reference or other proof by your employer or similar) with information on your hours of work.

In case you are a freelancer, please have your working experience proved by a third party (fiscal authorities, invoices etc.).

How much will it cost?

Tuition fees for the MACR are paid in full for the whole three semester. At the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam the tuition fee is 5965€.

In addition, enrolment fees apply for each semester. At FH Potsdam these fees amount to approx. 290€ per half year, including a semester ticket for public transportation in Brandenburg and Berlin.

Please plan on costs for living in addition to these costs (apartment/room, food, clothing, books etc).

Are there any possibilities of funding/scholarships?

The M.A. Childhood Studies and Children's Rights unfortunately does not have a scholarship program. We are working on contracts for small scholarships, however these will only be availble after admission to the course. Is it possible to do a PhD after graduating from the M.A. Childhood Studies and Children’s Rights?

After successful graduation, yes.

Is the degree accredited?

Not at the moment. It was developed and established in coherence to university degree accreditation criteria, the accreditation process at University of Applied Sciences is expected to be finished at the end of 2018.

How are modules taught?

The individual modules consist of at least two complimentary study and learning forms

Face-face sessions are scheduled for Thursday in the late aftrenoons/early evening hours (4pm or 5pm-8pm) and the whole day on Fridays (9am-6pm) and Saturdays (9am-5pm)

In addition, self-study is required (reading, presentations and writing of essays/module papers)

Please be aware that all materials are made available online - it is advisable to have a fast and good internet connection.

How are modules assessed?

Each module is concluded with an examination in the form of a written paper of about 5.000 words. For each successfully completed module, students receive 10 ECTS (European Credit Points). The final thesis is assessed with 20 ECTS. After successfully completing all modules, students receive a total of 90 ECTS.

Can I study part of the MACR abroad?

It is possible to study one semester at a partner university within the European Union. Exchange is organized via ERASMUS bilateral agreements. We recommend to make use of this opportunity in the third semester. It is not mandatory to study parts of the program abroad.

How do I find an apartment / a room in Potsdam or Berlin?

The University of Applied Sciences Potsdam does not own any dormitories, but you have several options to find housing:

Option 1. the Studentenwerk (student union): They own several dormitories in and around Potsdam, but the rooms are highly sought after and all rooms are occupied at this point. However, it is recommendable to register anyway, because some students might not arrive and take their rooms and you might have a chance there. The website with all the information can be found here announcement shown here (Oct 5th: starting on 8 am, the rest of the rooms, which have not been taken up to this point, is rented out!) Please read all information carefully!

Option 2: While you might have a shot at still securing housing with the Studentenwerk, you better not rely on it too much and also check option 2: Just across the street from the campus, a private institution is offering housing for students. You can check offer and prices here and ask them whether they still have rooms left.

Option 3: Get in touch with our student assistant network FHP Connect. You can also find and contact them on Facebook. They are all students at FHP and happy to help international students in any way they can. They might have some ideas on housing or might even know someone who is looking for a roommate. But they do more than just help with housing: they organise trips, events, parties, get-togethers, and much more. Make sure to get in touch with them!

The M.A. Childhood Studies and Children's Rights was established through a project co-funded by the European Commission and Save the Children, Sweden (European Network of Masters in Children’s Rights - Curriculum Development- ENMCR-CD; 2005-2008:

The planned curriculum is a good combination between theoretical knowledge, practical training and input from third parties (NGOs).”

Project Summary:

The ENMCR CD-project developed a joint MA study program in Children’s Rights at five European universities. Children’s active and effective participation in societal processes is the core element. The MA is directed to graduates and to professionals working in the field of childhood and children’s rights.

The overall objectives are to:

acquire human resources of higher learning education for policy and program design and implementation and institution management produce knowledge, innovative methodology and tools for policies, strategies, direction organise and implement a professional technical service specialised in promotion and development of children’s rights projects.

Outputs are:

Several running MA study programs as well as an extended network of universities and organisations. Common network activities, e.g.:

Conferences on specific Child Rights Themes, e.g. Child Rights Research: From Theory to Practice (Madrid, 2012); Children’s Rights to Non-Discrimination (Vilnius, 2014)

Development of common teaching material
Several intensive courses on specific child rights themes

Interdisciplinarity of the program:

The MA program is delivered through various different subject areas: intercultural education, sociology, economics, political science, international development studies, social and behavioural sciences, childhood culture studies, philosophy, social anthropology, psychology and language. This makes it highly interdisciplinary in nature, which is an innovation as it covers a wide range of disciplines where Children’s rights have until now been debated within single disciplines mainly.

linking research- led teaching and student’s projects

linking students with the professional world (Practical orientation). 

consolidating the theoretical basis of professionals’ work as well as enhancing their academic and report-writing skills 

strengthening interdisciplinary children’s culture and providing a clear anchoring in the surrounding environment

the promotion of immigrant’s  and refugee’s CR, which as of yet have only been treated half-heartedly in childhood studies and studies in CR. 

Linking of theory and practice in implementing the CRC in European and Extra-European countries – sharing experiences and outcomes:

The project closely collaborates with the professional world both nationally and internationally. Especially International Organizations (NGOs) will play a role in the implementation of the MA by giving guest lectures and offering seminars. By this the students will acquire insight into the professional world and are more likely to be employed after graduation.

The professionals, i.e. lifelong learners, taking the course are able to draw on their practical and applied experiences of working with children or within a CR framework, with the aim of generating socially validated scientific knowledge.

Realization of workshops for planning projects relating to CR is planned.

Establishment of contacts to institutions relevant to the realization of practical work. For example, close cooperation between the UCM and the Children’s Ombudsman in Madrid, as well as the regional government of Castilla-La Mancha and the Professional Association of Sociologists is established.

European dimension:

So far, the modules taught at the partner institutions follow a relatively narrow, national, even regional focus. Through the linking of the MA in different European countries (including CEE-EU member states and candidate countries) and student and staff mobility, a European dimension of the subjects taught will be ensured. 

A shortage of professionals with advocacy skills is perceivable on EU-level as concerns CR. Namely in government documentation, CR issues are found only marginally. The project aims at providing students and professionals with advocacy skills in order to ensure CR at EU-level.

The project will link onto the European HR policies and put an emphasis on social inclusion and integration from a CR perspective (closely linked to issues of the European Constitution)

Encouraging the sharing of experiences and know-how with respect to the CRC in international development studies will contribute to develop a joint European policy towards children in the developing world

Institutions from CEE and candidate countries will participate in some of the activities (Teacher's exchange, summer school Madrid, open conference Warsaw) with the aim of implementing the joint MA in the future.

Advisory Committee of the MACR

In June 2011 an advisory committee to the MACR was established. The committee advises the staff of the master program in terms of basic conceptional and theoretical questions. By this, knowledge and experience from outside the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam (from non-governmental and governmental organisations; other higher education institutions; associations) contributes to the success of the program and its further development. The MACR is a practice-oriented MA program. The close cooperation with the advisory committee members and their respective institutions is one pillar to this end. Some members offer support for students in terms of examination papers or general questions.

The advisory committee generally meets every semester (twice per year). The members of the advisory committee are personalities who feel connected to the MACR but do not teach on the program continually. MACR's lecturers and student representatives are always invited to participate in the committee’s meetings.

The advisory committee is coordinated by Jonas Gessner (and Rebecca Budde).

Polish-German academic dialogues about childrens' rights

Janusz Korczak and migration, project no.: 2016-17.

A brief description of the project:

The project Polish- German academic dialogues about childrens' rights, Janusz Korczak and migration, no. 2016-17 received funding of the Polish-German Foundation for Science (Deutsch-Polnische Wissenschaftsstiftung) for the years 2016 and 2017.

The project was realized by Janusz Korczak UNESCO Chair at the Maria Grzegorzewska University (project coordinator: Dr Urszula Markowska-Manista) in cooperation with a German partner from Internationale Akademie Berlin für innovative Pädagogik, Psychologie und Ökonomie (INA) Berlin (the person responsible for cooperation on the German side: prof. Manfred Liebel).

The aim of the project was an exchange of scientific and practical experiences in the field of popularization of science and in a research area applied between the subjects from Poland (the Maria Grzegorzewska University) and Germany (Internationale Akademie Berlin für innovative Pädagogik INA gGmBH) and within this area to publish a scientific book in Polish.

Elements of the project:

(1) The seminar on the rights of the child

This seminar was organized for the students of the Maria Grzegorzewska University whose guest was prof. Manfred Liebel
The aim of the seminar, which consisted of lectures, discussion and work in small thematic groups, was to analyse migrant children.s situation and rights in three areas: education, children.s rights and discrimination as well as a reference to the concept of .resilience. and Janusz Korczak.s pedagogical approach. These analyses . of an important group, i.e. students . will be used as a theoretical addition and a foundation for the realization of the main project, i.e. preparation of scientific exts and their publication in Polish in the form of a Polish-German scholarly monograph.

Why do we need a practice day?
In our Master's program and our scientific studies on children's rights, we attach great importance to the connection between theory and practice. The possibilities to establish this connection in university courses, however, are limited. With the help of an annual practice day we aim to extend these possibilities.

What are the goals of our practice day?
During the practice day various NGO's as well as governmental institutions, which are advocating for children's rights, present the focus of their work to students and graduates. Moreover they discuss ways of cooperation and mutual support.
