Occupational Safety Digital: Documentation

Illustration einer Holzwerkstatt mit Cuttermesser, Kreissäge, Bandsäge und Ständerbohrer.

The project "Occupational Safety Digital" made an important contribution to the further training of staff and teachers in digital teaching. Web-based trainings on the topic of occupational safety and health in the wood workshop were created as part of the project. The trainings and accompanying materials are made available free of charge as OER materials for subsequent use. Target groups include applied universities, technical-oriented schools, vocationally-oriented further education providers and craft enterprises.

Web Based Trainings (WBTs)

Cutting, sawing and drilling

It's easy to get hurt when cutting, sawing and drilling. Architecture student Sascha helps you think of the most important aspects when operating the machines.

Digital teaching and learning units on the topic of occupational safety and health were developed in the workshops of the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam (FHP) under the direction of the digital teaching unit (Julia Lee, digital teaching unit). The research and transfer unit (Dr Katharina Krüth, research and transfer unit) and workshop employees of the FHP were involved in the development. This process was accompanied by further training measures that had a multiplier effect.

The workshops are the flagship of the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam and stand for application-oriented and practical studies. Before the pandemic, the focus of instruction in the area of occupational safety and health was almost exclusively on non-digital formats. The pandemic made digitalisation in this area a necessity, as the usual form of instruction in large face-to-face events was no longer possible. For this reason, modularised e-learning materials on the topic of occupational safety and health were developed for the workshops of the FHP in the "Occupational Safety Digital" project, which can also be used by interested parties from other universities and educational institutions. In the form of open educational resources (OER), which can be accessed via Moodle as well as via the website of "Occupational Safety Digital", the know-how of the FHP has also been made accessible to interested parties outside the university. A diverse range of learning opportunities has been created in various workshops as well as through the software and further training materials made available.

In addition, the project has had a significant impact in the area of continuing education. Within the framework of the workshops and one-to-one consultations, which took place according to the peer-to-peer principle, among other things, employees from the workshops and the area of occupational safety and health have received further training in digital, video-based teaching, exchanged information on digital topics across departments and thereby simplified processes within their work areas.

Impressions from the project

In the workshops, the participants were able to acquire various digital and film skills:

  • Storyboarding, camera positions and framing, filming and lighting.
  • editing films with the programme Camtasia
  • Making interactive videos available in a learning management system (Moodle)
  • create tests for e-learning formats in Moodle

The project "Occupational Safety Digital" was invited to the 50th annual conference of the German Society for University Didactics in 2022. There, Julia Lee and Katharina Krüth presented the project with a poster.

Project results

For sustainable re-use, various materials and products were created in the project that can be used as open educational resources (OER) under a creative commons licence (CC BY-SA 4.0).

Two e-learning courses on the subject of "Occupational Safety in the Workshop" have been created:

The e-learning courses serve to repeat what has been learned. A prerequisite for their use is prior personal instruction by a workshop manager. The workshop supervisor must also inform the participants of any deviations or changes. The material can be used and further processed as OER material with the acceptance of the disclaimer: Neither the authors nor the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam accept liability for any consequences arising from the use of the e-learning and the associated materials.

E-learning courses have been created as "shells" for two other topics. The content for these can be added by the students themselves. The titles of the e-learning courses on occupational safety and health are:

Eight explanatory videos have been produced on the subject of occupational safety in the woodworking shop:

The video series is also available on the Vimeo channel of the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam.

Interactive posters have been created for the four e-learning courses. You can download them at the bottom of the e-learning course page. Each poster is available in three versions:

  • With fantasy creatures, machines and QR codes to specific e-learning modules
  • Only with machines in the wood workshop and QR codes for specific e-learning modules
  • Blank, only the poster with free spaces for editing and linking via QR codes to own learning management systems

There are 4 times 4 QR codes, 16 in total. You can download each of these at the bottom of the page on the e-learning course. There is a separate QR code for each module, for each machine. This can be placed near the machine for mobile learning. In addition, the QR codes can be embedded in self-designed (digital) work materials and worksheets. The QR codes were also produced as stickers.

The project was invited to the 50th dghd conference at the University of Paderborn on the topic "Transformations – Perspectives on a post-digital university teaching" from 06 to 09 September 2022. Julia Lee (digital teaching unit) and Katharina Krüth (research and transfer unit) presented "Occupational Safety Digital" with a project poster to the Germany-wide university community.

20 high-quality material packages for teaching the WBTs will be given away to Brandenburg universities, schools or companies. These consist of:

  • 4 x interactive learning posters in A2 for the workshop and the classroom on non-transparent paper for WBT 1 and WBT 2 each with and without figures
  • 8 x QR code stickers for the machines and exercises, which are highly adhesive
  • QR code flyer for the 4 WBTs
