Academic Writing – Basics & Formalities (Part 1)
This three-day workshop is the first part of a two-part intensive seminar on academic writing for students with German as a foreign or second language. Both parts can be attended independently of each other, but build on each other in terms of content.
Part 1 focuses on the basics and formal requirements of academic texts. You will learn how to formulate questions clearly, plan the writing process strategically, use the linguistic features of academic texts and avoid typical formal pitfalls.

Language: German (with supporting explanations in English)
Target group: Students of all degree programmes with German as a foreign or second language
Contents:
- Functions, characteristics and types of academic texts
- Developing research questions and topics
- Writing process: topic analysis, research, outline, time management
- Strategies for overcoming writer's block
- Academic language: sentence structure, idioms, connecting words
- Citing and working with sources (basics)
- Formal requirements and layout
- Working with AI: use, evaluation, limitations
- Writing exercises on introductions, outlines, abstracts with peer feedback
During and after the seminar, there is the option to arrange individual consultation hours with the instructor.
