Academic Writing – Grammar, Style and Text Analysis (Part 2)

The course focuses on the linguistic development of academic texts. Through practical writing exercises, we work on various academic text types, such as essays, term papers and dissertations. Among other things, you will practise writing summaries and paraphrases, as well as formulating analytical and comparative passages.

A particular focus is placed on the linguistic structure of academic texts in German, with both grammar and vocabulary – as the tools of writing – taking centre stage: we examine typical phrases used in academic writing, reported speech (the first subjunctive), key grammatical structures, as well as issues relating to punctuation and textual coherence.

Through collaborative text work, peer feedback and short editing sessions, you will develop a greater awareness of the style, precision and clarity of your texts. The aim is to formulate academic texts in a way that is linguistically clearer, more nuanced and more persuasive.

  • This seminar also examines the use of AI tools in the writing process – particularly with regard to text revision, stylistic improvement and responsible use.
  • The seminar is primarily aimed at international students from all degree programmes who wish to further develop their written expression in academic German. The seminar is conducted in German. Individual coaching sessions can be booked afterwards.
  • This seminar can be attended either as a continuation of Part 1 or independently of it.
  • The workshop is organised by the IFMB2 project (International Office).
