Toilets for Everyone

Installation of unisex toilets in the university buildings

Unisextoilette der Fachhochschule Potsdam

Student project

The toilets for everyone are based on a proposal by the student working group AG_diskriminierungsfreie_FHP, which had made it its goal "as students (...) to contribute in a supportive way to making the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam a discrimination-free space".

They applied for the installation of unisex toilets in the university buildings in the senate of the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam. The resolution reads: "The senate accepts the proposal to install a unisex toilet in every building of the FH Potsdam in order to recognise the diversity of university members in terms of gender.

The senators called for new terms and design elements to be used to signpost and title the toilets, moving away from "unisex" or "disabled" (in cases where the disabled toilet would be "rededicated").

There are a total of eight toilets for everyone in the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam buildings that can be used by everyone, regardless of gender. These are "rededicated" ladies' toilets or so-called disabled toilets (toilet for everyone – barrier-free). Where possible, additional baby changing facilities have been retrofitted. The toilets are marked on the door signs as toilets for everyone and provided with information on the "rededication". The toilets for everyone, barrier-free or with baby-changing facilities, can be found on the equal opportunities office's well-being map.
