Concept for the Sustainable Restoration and Energy-Efficient Refurbishment of the Former Bavarian State Representation in Bonn
The project is intended to evaluate the former Bavarian State Representation of Sep Ruf in Bonn in terms of building design, energy efficiency, monument preservation and economy.
The German Foundation for Monument Protection (DSD) acquired its new headquarters in Schlegelstraße in Bonn at the end of 2009 and moved in at the end of 2010. The building is located in the former government district and was originally designed and realised in 1955 by the Munich architect Sep Ruf (1908 -1982) as a representation of the state of Bavaria to the federal government. It was one of the first newly built state representations in Bonn. Sep Ruf's oeuvre also includes the Head of Administration, the Chancellor's Bungalow in Bonn in 1963/64 and the German pavilion group at the World Exhibition in Brussels in 1958, making Ruf one of the most important representatives of post-war modernism in West Germany. With the study on the sustainable restoration and energy-efficient refurbishment of this exemplary administrative building from the 1950s, the DSD is acting as a role model and would like to present new, transferable findings and solutions.
The following aspects are to be researched, evaluated and publicised as part of the planned project:
Building design and energy targets
Energy savings in building operation
Consideration of grey energy in materials and components used
Life cycle analysis (LCA) to determine the total energy requirement
Optimised user comfort and building climate
Optimisation of building protection
Design and conservation objectives
Evaluation of the existing building, including modifications made in previous years
Preservation and restoration of the central design elements of the original design by Sep Ruf
Visual experience of the building's construction history
Economic objectives
Investigation of investment and amortisation in relation to possible
total energy savings
