30th Conference of the Working Group on the Archiving of Documents from Digital Systems, 2027

Premiere: The first symposium of the AUdS working group took place in Münster from the 3rd to the 4th of March 1997.

This laid the foundations for the most important annual network of archivists from German-speaking countries dedicated to long-term digital archiving.

New insights: During the second conference, held between the 9th and 10th of March 1998 at the Ludwigsburg State Archives, it became clear just how important open standards are for long-term digital archiving.

Migration: The question of whether and how digital documents can be kept readable in the long term
through format conversion was a key topic at the third conference, held between the 22nd and 23rd of March 1999 at the Federal Archives in Koblenz.

At the turn of the millennium: The focus of this conference, held in Mannheim from the 10th to the 11th of April 2000, was on IT-supported case management in archives.

"Virtual Worlds in the Magazine": that was the title of the conference held on the 5th and 6th of March 2001 in Munich. The event focused on the sorting, storage, safeguarding and use of data.

A reference model: At the conference held in Dresden from the 5th to the 6th of March 2002, the OAIS (Open Archival Information System) played a particularly important role.

Early e-government: this was the focus of the conference held on the 17th and 18th of March 2003 in Berlin.

Digital signatures: How can the evidential value of digital documents be safeguarded and preserved in legal terms in the long term? This question was discussed at the Hamburg State Archives from the 27th to the 28th of April 2004.

The cost-effectiveness of digital archives: At this conference, held from the 9th to 10th of March 2005 at the Mannheim City Archives, participants exchanged views on cost-benefit analyses, efficient processes and the use of resources in long-term archiving.

Electronic files: The conference held in Düsseldorf from the 14th to the 15th of March 2006 examined IT-supported case management, electronic file management and the archiving of websites.

10 years of AUdS: On the 20th and 21st of March 2007, discussions were held at the Stuttgart City Archives on strategies for the secure, long-term preservation and accessibility of data.

Implementation of weeding interfaces: The conference held in Koblenz on the 21st and 22nd of April 2008 focused on the practical transfer and long-term archiving of digital and hybrid records, and on the development of appropriate system structures within public authorities.

Records Management: On the 27th and 28th of April 2009, the State Archives of St. Gallen hosted a conference focusing on concepts and practical implementation, as well as the introduction of document management systems (DMS) within the ministerial administration.

Consultancy for public authorities and data transfer: case studies and experiences relating to data migration, particularly in the military sector, were discussed in Munich from the 1st to 2nd of March 2010.

“Towards a digital archive – the current status and future prospects of projects for archiving digital records”: Under this overarching theme, the focus was on examples of best practice at the event held in Schwerin on the 2nd to 3rd of March 2011

20 short presentations: The conference, held on the 13th and 14th of March 2012 at the Ludwigsburg State Archives, focused on practical reports on the digital acquisition of records, the further development of the DOMEA concept, and concepts and workflows for electronic files in archives.

Interoperability of systems: One of the items on the agenda at the conference held in Dresden from the 13rd to 14th of March 2013 was seamless communication between specialist information systems and digital magazines.

AIP: The Archival Information Package workshop took place on the 11th to 12th of March 2014 at the Reithaus in Weimar. Challenges in structuring digital objects.

Archival networks: On the 10th and 11th March 2015, the Austrian State Archives in Vienna focused on networks and cross-border cooperation in the field of digital archiving.

Education and training: From the 1st to 2nd of March 2016 at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam, the importance of long-term digital archiving (LZA) in the curricula of degree programmes in archiving, library science, museum studies and Informationswissenschaften was analysed.

20 years of AUdS: The 21st AUdS was held in Basel on the 28th of February and 1st of March 2017 and addressed issues such as barrier-free and secure access to archived digital records.

Archival Humility: On the 7th and 8th of March 2018, the Marburg Technology Centre hosted a discussion on when data is worthy of archiving and how much standardisation is required in day-to-day archiving work.

AUdS Camp: During interactive discussion sessions at the conference held on the 12th and 13th of March 2019 at the National Archives, participants discussed practical obstacles, standards and current developments in digital archiving.

Virtual once again: The following conference, which examined the challenges and potential solutions for securing digital records in practice,also took place online on the 22nd and 23rd March 2021.

Held online for the third time: On the 15th and 16th March 2022, the focus was once again on building bridges between archives and libraries in New Zealand, as well as on the 25th anniversary of the AUdS.

Hybrid: The partly virtual conference took place at the MARCHIVUM in Mannheim on the 21st and 22nd of March 2023. The focus was on practical and pragmatic approaches for small and medium-sized archives.

Organised by six local archives, the event, which took place in Zurich on the 5th and 6th of March 2024, focused on the current state of electronic archiving solutions in German-speaking countries.

In collaboration with the Saxon State Archives: On the 5th and 6th of March 2025, 100 participants and 250 online viewers gathered at the Chemnitz City Archives to discuss how to handle various file formats.

Teamwork with AI: The most recent conference, held from the 8th to 19th of March 2026 at the Národní archiv in Prague, examined the extent to which modern technology can support long-term digital archiving.
