Zwischen Tür und Angel

Historically, this transition had an important cultural function: as a hallway, vestibule or vestibule ... Arrivals, departures and social encounters were spatialised. However, with the functionalist architecture of the 20th century and post-war housing construction, this space was increasingly reduced. In many places, the entrance area was transformed into a mere circulation area: door, cloakroom, short corridor. This meant that an important spatial and social transition was lost. The project Zwischen Tür und Angel is dedicated to this often overlooked space. Twenty designers from the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam are developing objects for the moment of entry and exit. The works examine how design can influence the transition between outside and inside, functionally, spatially and emotionally, and how design can contribute to rethinking this everyday threshold space. The resulting works will be presented for the first time as part of Berlin Design Week 2026.
