Model Making, Painting and Metal Workshop

Metallwerkstatt der FH Potsdam
© Michaela Maier

The model-making, painting and metal workshops of the Design department are creative spaces and are used for the realisation and production of mock-ups, dimension and functional models as well as finished prototypes ready for presentation.

Utilisation

The workshops are to be understood and used as a creative space for the realisation of ideas within the framework of studies. This only works if the place is appreciated and everyone takes co-responsibility for themselves and fellow students. Order and structure are the basis and create space for new ideas.

After participating in the workshop introduction, the workshops are freely accessible as part of the study programme and form an important element in the design process.

Workshop courses & workshop introduction

The workshop course deals with the basic craft skills of model making and takes place concurrently in the winter and summer semesters and additionally in the form of a block course during the semester break. Participation in the introduction is a prerequisite for any use of the model-making workshops as well as for taking seminars for the CNC milling course.

The dates are announced on INCOM in the workspace "Modellbauwerkstatt" as well as in the course catalogue. Binding registration must take place in person.

Materials

The most common materials used to represent models are:

  • Paper and cardboard
  • Synthetic and foam materials made of polystyrene, polyurethane, acrylic glass
  • Composite materials such as sandwich panels, fibre plastics, etc.
  • Wood as solid material or in the form of plywood, chipboard and fibreboard
  • Textiles and woven fabrics
  • Metal materials such as raw and stainless steel, aluminium, copper, brass in the form of wire, sheet, fabric, plates or as bar stock

Devices for gas-shielded and electric welding, soft and hard soldering

The most common materials used to represent models are:

  • Paper and cardboard
  • Synthetic and foam materials made of polystyrene, polyurethane, acrylic glass
  • Composite materials such as sandwich panels, fibre plastics, etc.
  • Wood as a solid material or in the form of plywood, chipboard and fibreboard; textiles and woven fabrics
  • Metal materials such as raw and stainless steel, aluminium, copper, brass in the form of wire, sheet, fabric, plates or as bar stock.

The most important materials are recorded in the material database. It is located in the library. The collection currently comprises approx. 300 colour, material and technology samples, systematically arranged according to material groups in freely accessible display compartments. For all archived materials, main properties, manufacturer and contact details are available. All samples can be picked up and borrowed for presentation purposes, for example. In addition, it is possible to search the stock and obtain further information via web interface.
