The eight state-funded higher education institutions in Brandenburg – five universities of applied sciences and three universities – had already been working closely together since the end of 2019 on the ‘Research Data Management Brandenburg’ project, funded by the Brandenburg Ministry of Science, Research and Culture (MWFK) (FDM-BB), funded by the Brandenburg Ministry of Science, Research and Culture (MWFK), from which the state-level FDM-BB initiative emerged. Following the project’s approval in October 2022, the participating higher education institutions can look forward to funding of approximately 2.5 million euros from the BMBF and the MWFK to establish and institutionalise sustainable research data management as part of the IN-FDM-BB project.

Thanks to several years of preparatory work within the FDM-BB project – including an analysis of the science policy environment, qualitative and quantitative surveys of the requirements at Brandenburg’s higher education institutions, and the development of recommendations for action and implementation – it has been possible to identify specific areas of action for the research data strategy, which was adopted on thr 18th of July 2022 by the MWFK and the BLHP (Brandenburg State Conference of University Presidents). Building on this, over the coming years, local expertise will be developed at the universities, FDM services and IT services will be offered, and networking and knowledge transfer will be promoted.
