Connected by data - Successful institutionalisation of research data management in Brandenburg
The successful completion of the IN-FDM-BB project marks the start of an exciting new phase for the State Initiative for Research Data Management (FDM) in Brandenburg, which will set new standards in research data management through the introduction of joint FDM services, the establishment of a Brandenburg-wide FDM competence centre and specific FDM IT centres.
The joint project "IN-FDM-BB: Institutionalised and sustainable research data management in Brandenburg" has implemented sustainable research data management (RDM) at the eight universities in Brandenburg within three years. This was achieved through new positions (or shares of positions) for RDM at all eight universities in Brandenburg at the respective library or in the research service. The so-called data stewards benefit from the Brandenburg-wide certification courses and training.
The two RDM services RDMO-BB and RADAR-BB [1], which are operated centrally by the University of Potsdam as a technical hub for all Brandenburg universities, represent a milestone in the stabilisation process.
"We are delighted that research data management in Brandenburg has taken on a pioneering role in digitisation and that a sustainable, shared research data infrastructure has been successfully established," says Dr Janine Straka from Potsdam University Library and co-head of the FDM-BB state initiative.
The FDM-BB state initiative has been setting standards in Brandenburg since 2019 and a newly established competence centre will lead the initiative in future [2]. This will ensure and drive forward the seamless integration of Brandenburg into other RDM state initiatives, the National Research Data Infrastructure(NFDI) and European(EOSC) and international developments.
"We have thus succeeded in institutionalising RDM at various levels: Both locally and regionally, both technologically and skills-orientated. Without simultaneous federal and state funding, this rapid and cooperative development would not have been possible," adds Prof. Dr Heike Neuroth from the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam (FHP) and co-head of the FDM-BB state initiative.
The FDM-BB state initiative will continue to benefit from the different expertise of the following eight universities in the future:
- Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU)
- European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) (EUV)
- University of Applied Sciences Potsdam (FHP)
- Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF (FB)
- Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE)
- Brandenburg University of Technology (THB)
- Technical University of Applied Sciences Wildau (THW)
- University of Potsdam (UP)
