Gohrisch Design Workshop at the International Shostakovich Days
A new exhibition as part of the International Shostakovich Days in Gohrisch showcases student designs for the architectural development of rural areas in Saxon Switzerland.
An exhibition entitled “Gohrisch Design Workshop – Material, Connection, Landscape” opens on 26th of June at 3 pm in the spa town of Gohrisch, showcasing the results of a teaching and research project by the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam. Students on the Architecture and Urban Design degree programme have developed concepts for the careful further development of the Gohrisch community – ranging from urban planning strategies to concrete architectural designs.
The focus is on how architecture in rural areas can respond to the landscape, climate and local building culture. Gohrisch’s unique topographical setting, nestled between table mountains, hiking trails and historic summer houses, forms the starting point for the work.
The project follows the three working methods of observation, design and construction, which structure the entire design process. The landscape is understood as an active design space that significantly shapes scale, materiality and spatial organisation.
On display are analyses, drawings, models and design studies from the winter and summer semesters of 2025/2026. These range from urban planning strategies for sensitive village development to architectural designs for houses and small groups of buildings that integrate precisely into the landscape.
The exhibition, held as part of the International Shostakovich Days, invites visitors to gain insights into current architectural research and design processes and to engage in a dialogue about the future of building in rural areas.
