The University of Applied Sciences Potsdam has been successfully included in the European EMAS register. It has received the certificate from the Chamber of Industry and Commerce Potsdam in recognition of this. Through its EMAS-compliant environmental management system, the university systematically integrates environmental protection into its operations: It records its environmental impacts, sets environmental targets and regularly reviews their implementation. The registration was preceded by an external environmental audit.
“Anyone who wants to play a credible role in shaping the world of tomorrow must first put their own house in order. Sustainability is already firmly established at the FHP in many areas of teaching, research and knowledge and technology transfer. With EMAS, we are now systematically reviewing our university operations and setting out a clear framework for the next steps,” says Prof. Dr Tobias Schröder, Vice-President for Teaching and Learning.
The environmental statement documents the university’s consumption and emissions, as well as its environmental guidelines and targets. The environmental programme sets out specific measures for the coming years. Regular internal reviews and external audits form the basis for the further development of the environmental programme. Thus, entry into the EMAS register marks the start of a continuous improvement process.
Ina Hänsel, President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Potsdam, explains: “Introducing an environmental management system is a challenging task, involving a considerable investment of staff time and resources, and therefore represents a genuine commitment on the part of companies and institutions that wish to take on greater environmental responsibility. We are delighted that the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam has documented its environmental commitment in accordance with the highest European standards through EMAS certification, thereby setting an important example for other institutions in the region.”
Gerlinde Reich, Head of Administration, the Chancellor of the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam, emphasises: “Environmental protection in everyday university life can only be achieved through collaboration. The EMAS process has strengthened cooperation between the administrative departments and highlighted specific areas for action. I would like to thank everyone involved for their commitment.”
