"A Million" – film screening followed by a discussion with the director & Kilian Bruns

"A Million" (Arata Mori, 2021, 65 minutes, English subtitles) is not a classic documentary, but rather a sensual observation. In calm, scenic images, the film follows people and places along the new Silk Road. Without a voiceover or explanatory commentary, it creates an associative space in which architectural replicas, global symbols, and everyday processes coexist and generate new meanings. The camera observes precisely but remains restrained. The film thrives on perception, not explanation.

The structure is loosely divided into three parts: a documentary look at movement and trade, a surreal condensation of cityscapes and an open epilogue.

Director Arata Mori works between Berlin and Japan. He combines film, dance and architecture in his projects, focusing particularly on transitions between body and space, reality and staging. "A Million" is his feature film debut and was shown at DOK Leipzig in 2021. Mori takes an interdisciplinary, performative approach to documentary, evident in this film.
