Simplified Recognition of Prior Learning Achievements for FaMIs: New Resolution in Force from September 2026

Are you a FaMI (archive or library) student with at least two years’ relevant professional experience, or do you hold a part-time position in the archive or library sector alongside your studies? If so, you can now have up to 66 ECTS credits recognised towards your Bachelor’s degree. This is made possible by the PAU’s latest resolution of September 2026.

Students on the bachelor's degree programmes in Archival and Library Science who have completed the FaMI qualification (specialising in Archives or Library Science) and with relevant professional experience of at least two years (or relevant part-time employment during their studies) can now benefit from a new, simplified credit transfer model. A PAU resolution passed in September 2026 enables qualified FaMIs to receive up to 60 or 66 ECTS credits for the recognition of prior learning achievements in their degree programme, spread over the standard seven semesters.

Target group

This scheme is aimed at FaMIs specialising in archiving and library science who have at least two years’ qualified professional experience and wish to gain further qualifications by completing a Bachelor’s degree. Students with FaMI training who can demonstrate relevant part-time employment during their studies (at least 600 hours) will also benefit.

Requirements for flat-rate recognition of prior learning achievements

Flat-rate recognition of prior learning achievements for non-university qualifications is granted if the following conditions are met:

  • Completed FaMI training in the field of archiving or librarianship
  • at least two years’ professional experience in an archival or library-related role, or
  • part-time employment relevant to the subject area during your studies (at least 600 hours)

If you meet these criteria, certain modules of your degree programme will be recognized for prior learning achievements on a flat-rate basis, i.e. without an individual case-by-case assessment.

A detailed overview of the modules eligible for credit transfer, as well as the exact conditions, can be found in the PDF overview of the FaMI track.

Recognition of prior learning achievements is handled by the relevant programme director.
