Preparation for the semester abroad
The University of Applied Sciences Potsdam does not have its own dormitories or accommodation. The housing market in Potsdam and Berlin is tight, it is not always easy to find an apartment. It is best to start looking for an apartment as soon as you have decided to spend your semester abroad in Potsdam.
Follow FHP Connect
The student team of FHP Connect organizes events and excursions for international students during the semester, where you can get to know student life, the FHP and the cities of Potsdam and Berlin. Follow them right now on social media.
Register with the Buddy Program
Sign up for our buddy program and get in touch with other FHP students even before you start your studies at our university. The FHP Buddies will help you before your arrival and at the start of your studies.
Plan your arrival - Welcome and Orientation Days
Prior to the start of the semester, the International Office will hold Welcome and Orientation Days for all exchange students. Plan your arrival accordingly and inform the International Office about the planned arrival day. Please note that rooms in student residences are often only rented from 01 October or 01 April. So for the transition you will have to look for another accommodation.
The following steps are necessary to end your stay with us. Remember to cancel all memberships and contracts in time or to inform others of your new registration address.
If you want to stay in Potsdam until the end of the semester or want to use the semester ticket until the end of the semester, then you do not have to do anything and will be automatically deregistered at the end of the semester.
If you want to deregister before the end of the semester (31.03. or 30.09.), you can apply for a partial refund of the semester ticket fee. Use the form to apply for a refund and submit it to the International Office by email together with the application for exmatriculation.
If you need a confirmation of your period of stay with us for your home university, then get the signature from the International Office. Send us the pre-filled document by email.
If you have registered your residence with the city of Potsdam or Berlin, you must also deregister there.
Cancel the contract 3 months before your departure if there is no end date in the contract. In Germany it is customary to make a handover appointment with the landlord or janitor on the day you move out. Be prepared, clean the apartment thoroughly and do not leave any garbage or objects behind!
Inform your insurance company about the end of your studies and about your new valid address abroad. If you want to cancel your health insurance taken out in Germany before the end of the semester, you must submit proof of exmatriculation for this purpose (see exmatriculation application above).
Inform your bank when you leave Germany and ask for the final steps to cancel the account. If you can continue the account, you must inform the bank about your new registration address.
Grades and Transcript of Records
At the end of your semester abroad at the FHP, you will be issued a Transcript of Records for the overview of your achievements.
At the FHP, credit points are awarded as ECTS points. 60 ECTS points correspond to the workload of one academic year. The acquisition of one ECTS credit point is based on an average workload of 30 time-hours.
