BEng Urban Water Management | Dual Study Programme

Blaue Rohrleitungen in einem Wasserwerk

Urban Water Management organizes the handling of drinking water, service water, wastewater and stormwater in and around settlements – these can be individual homesteads or villages, cities of all sizes or metropolitan areas. The hygienic supply of clean drinking water and a sanitary and environmentally sound disposal of wastewater are a fundamental part of elementary public services.
In the course of study, university semesters alternate with practical semesters, which are completed at the training partner. The theoretical and practical phases are coordinated in terms of content.

The Study

Closely connected with nature and the environment

The organization covers the planning, construction and operation of facilities for urban water management, e. g. waterworks, supply networks, sewer networks or wastewater treatment plants. In Germany, it is usually assigned to civil engineering. Drinking water supply technically includes water extraction, water treatment, water storage, water transport and water distribution up to individual buildings. Wastewater disposal (sewage and stormwater) is divided into wastewater drainage, wastewater collection, wastewater treatment and sewage sludge treatment. Special structures below the earth's surface, such as separating structures, spillways or stormwater retention basins, are part of the underground sewer system. Stormwater management includes unsealing of surfaces, stormwater retention, stormwater drainage, and stormwater discharge conditions (receiving waters).

Since the element of water is not a common commodity but a human right, it must be treated and safeguarded with the principles of sustainability. Consequently, the fields of activity in urban water management are closely linked to aspects of nature and the environment.

Is this course of study a good fit for you?

The dual degree program in Urban Water Management holds an exciting mix of elements of civil engineering and hydrology. If you are interested in how rainwater infiltration systems work, how valuable groundwater is protected or how underground sewer networks are planned, then this subject is the best option.

To do so, you should have a basic interest in construction processes and an understanding of mathematics and physics. Digital tools and software programs are used for the design and dimensioning of the systems, which requires basic IT knowledge and affinity towards it.

The parallel study and practice requires good organization and a solution-oriented, independent way of working. Your communication skills are in demand, as you will be in constant exchange with a team of architects, construction company contractors and other stakeholders in the office and on the construction site.

Career Prospects

Career Prospects

Did you know that Germany is the world leader in plant engineering for urban water management? As a sought-after specialist, good prospects open up for you upon completion of the dual degree program in Urban Water Management. Since you will already gain work experience in a company during your studies, this will additionally increase your career opportunities.

Possible areas of application

  • water and sewage associations
  • public administrations
  • planning offices
  • construction management
  • Manufacturers of plant technology
  • manufacturers of building products
  • in distribution
  • expert or consulting activities

Prepared for the working world

The dual degree program in Urban Water Management prepares you to competently handle the following situations:

  • You will supervise the construction of new urban water management plants as well as construction measures on existing plants from the first sketch to completion, e. g. the construction of a sewage treatment plant, the reconstruction and modernization of a waterworks or the rehabilitation of a sewer network.
  • To do this, you design, construct and calculate the individual parts of the plants from the pipe to the digestion tower. You decide on the construction method, select the construction elements and the suitable materials and technologies.
  • You ensure that the plants comply with both legal and technical requirements. For example, you accompany the approval process and ensure compliance with the current requirements for the purification performance of the waterworks.
  • You plan and control the execution of construction projects in the office and on the construction site. In dialogue with architects, specialist planners, building owners and the companies carrying out the work, you ensure the completion of the construction project with a view to time, costs and quality.
  • You will operate the water supply and sanitation systems and ensure that drinking water flows from the tap at all times and that wastewater is treated in accordance with the state of the art so that water bodies are not polluted.
  • They work on technical problems independently and systematically in teams and individually on the basis of scientific working methods. In doing so, you will apply your knowledge and skills, e. g. in the use of specialist software for the planning and dimensioning of plants as well as geoinformation software for the computer-aided networking of all information on the inventory of plants and expand your knowledge as required. You support decision-making processes, e. g. through reports and presentations.
  • In addition to the classic range of activities, you will have the opportunity to work for manufacturers of construction products and plant technology (Germany is the world leader in plant technology for urban water management), in sales and in consulting and expert activities.
