The Study

Ensure new construction and maintenance of structures

The design and calculation of structures are a major focus of the dual degree pogram in civil engineering. This is done on the basis of mathematical-technical and scientific knowledge and methods. They are the basis, for example, for the planning of structures, the selection of building materials and dimensioning of components, the determination of the load-bearing capacity of the foundation soil or those measures that become necessary in the meantime during the construction of structures.

Apart from the structural disciplines, construction management is another focus. This involves planning and managing the implementation of construction projects. This concerns the selection of construction methods, the economic efficiency in planning and execution of construction work as well as the cooperation with all planners as well as the executors directly on the construction site in compliance with all legal regulations. In addition to new construction, the preservation of buildings and the construction of existing buildings are of great importance.

Is this course of study a good fit for you?

For the dual degree program in civil engineering, you should have a high level of mathematical, physical as well as technical understanding. The use of subject-specific software, reports and presentations require IT skills and an openness to digital solutions. When faced with problems, you take a solution-oriented approach and excel in working independently.

The high level of practical relevance of the dual study program in civil engineering allows you to enter the professional world at an early stage, so you can apply theoretical knowledge directly in one of the cooperating practical sites. The parallel study and practice requires good organization and communication skills. At the same time, the digital orientation of the study program allows you a lot of flexibility and you are in constant exchange with the lecturers.

Career Prospects

Career Prospects

Civil engineers are sought-after specialists with a high level of responsibility. Therefore, career starters are offered very good prospects upon successful completion of their studies. You will already grow into your practical company during the dual study program, which will give you many opportunities both there and on the job market.

Civil engineers can choose to become self-employed, for example with an engineering office, or you can opt for employment in a company in the construction industry, the building trade, project management or similar. A subsequent master's degree is also possible.

Possible areas of application

  • Road construction company
  • Building and civil engineering companies
  • Construction planning departments
  • Construction management
  • Property developers
  • Building materials industry
  • Architect's office
  • Distribution
  • Manufacturer of building products
  • Development departments
  • Public administrations
  • Consultancy and expertise
  • Facility management etc.

Prepared for the working world

The Civil Engineering degree program prepares you to competently handle the following situations:

  • You will accompany the construction of a new building as well as construction measures on existing buildings from the first sketch to completion, e. g. the erection of a factory building, the conversion and modernization of a residential building or the maintenance of a railroad bridge.
  • To do this, you design, construct and calculate the individual parts of the structure from the foundation to the roof. You decide on the construction method, select the building elements and the appropriate materials such as steel, wood, masonry or concrete.
  • You ensure that the structure meets both legal and technical requirements. For example, you accompany the approval process and ensure stability as well as compliance with current energy efficiency and emission protection requirements.
  • You plan and control the execution of construction projects in the office and on the construction site. In dialog with architects, specialist planners, building owners and the companies carrying out the work, you ensure the completion of the building project with regard to time, costs and quality.
  • You will work on technical problems independently and systematically in a team as well as individually on the basis of scientific working methods. In doing so, you will apply your knowledge and skills, e.g. in the use of specialist software, and expand your knowledge as required. You support decision-making processes, e. g. through reports and presentations.

Study Contents

During the first four semesters, students learn primarily the technical and scientific fundamentals of civil engineering. In the sixth and seventh semesters, the specialized knowledge is deepened and an individual focus is set through elective modules.

In the dual bachelor's degree program in civil engineering, university semesters alternate with practical phases and semesters that are completed at the training partner. The theoretical and practical phases are coordinated in terms of content. Students are therefore bound to the course of study according to the standard curriculum. This consists of compulsory modules in structural engineering and infrastructure systems, compulsory elective modules and concludes with a bachelor's thesis and its defense.

Teaching formats

The theory semesters in the dual study program Civil Engineering guarantee a theoretically sound and, due to the choice of teaching formats, an equally practical study:

  • Lectures
  • Seminars
  • (laboratory) exercises
  • Projects
  • Excursions
  • Tutorials

Modules

The content of the dual bachelor's degree program in civil engineering consists of general fundamentals, fundamentals of construction, content of structural engineering, construction management and law, and infrastructure:

  • Mathematics, technical drawing, surveying, communication and scientific work, reflection on theory-practice transfer and course of studies.
  • Statics, structural design, building materials, building physics
  • Foundation engineering, solid construction, steel construction, timber construction, building in existing structures, construction history
  • Project management, construction operations, construction planning, construction law, construction management, environmental protection
  • Urban construction

Practical phases

You will be under contract with a company for the entire duration of your studies and will complete the practical phases and practical time there.
