Infrastructure Systems | Dual (BEng)

Tram-Schienen

The dual bachelor's degree programme in infrastructure systems is about the planning, construction and operation of technical infrastructure facilities. This includes transport networks with their roads as well as railways and waterways, as well as the private and public transport moving on them, which ensures our mobility. Systems for energy and water supply as well as wastewater disposal are also included. The fields of activity of infrastructure systems specialists are closely linked to energy and environmental issues. Profile

Resource-efficient infrastructure systems for the cities of tomorrow

In order for infrastructure systems to function well in the long term and also in their interrelationships with each other, questions of urban design and spatial planning are part of the planning fundamentals. One focus of the infrastructure systems degree programme is on the design of transport infrastructure facilities. The design initially deals with the routing of roads and railways, whereby traffic junctions have a special significance for traffic control. Traffic control facilities, such as traffic signals, are assigned to traffic engineering. For the operation of public transport systems, the creation of timetables is a central task. The networking of transport systems and the integration of digital technologies in the sense of a smart city are becoming increasingly important. The construction and maintenance of roads and railways involves the type of construction, the selection and processing of building materials and construction methods, as well as analysis methods for assessing damage. The design of supply and disposal infrastructure facilities is another focus. Urban water management is about the conservation and use of natural water resources for the supply of water and in the disposal of wastewater.

Is this degree programme right for me?

The high level of practical relevance of the dual study programme infrastructure systems allows you to enter the professional world at an early stage, so you can apply theoretical knowledge directly at your cooperating practical site. Parallel study and practice require good organisation, communication skills and an independent way of working.

You bring these qualities with you

  • Interest in structures and construction processes as well as in the topics of transport and mobility, energy and water
  • Good mathematical and physical understanding
  • IT affinity and an openness to digital solutions
  • Good communication skills as well as solution-oriented and independent thinking
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work in a team and independently

Career Prospects

Graduates of the dual bachelor's degree programme in infrastructure systems are sought-after professionals with prospects both in traditional institutions in the construction and infrastructure sector as well as in innovation industries or start-ups. You will already grow into your practical company during the dual degree programme, which will open up many opportunities for you both there and on the labour market.

Possible areas of application

  • Transport services
  • Public utilities
  • Planning departments
  • Construction management
  • Water boards
  • Public administrations
  • Consulting companies
  • Information technology companies

Prepared for the world of work

The dual degree programme infrastructure systems prepares you to competently manage the following situations:

  • You plan and operate innovative infrastructure systems in our cities and regions to secure our mobility, energy and water supply and wastewater treatment.
  • Your plans for new infrastructure systems as well as your ideas for redesigning existing infrastructure systems increase the quality of life in cities and contribute to their environmentally friendly and resource-saving development.
  • They integrate knowledge and solutions from many sectors, such as civil engineering, business administration, computer science, but also classical mechanical engineering and process engineering.
  • They use computer-based planning tools and large databases for planning and operation. In this way, you look for new approaches for the design of a smart city. For example, you link buildings with digital worlds.
  • You ensure that infrastructure systems meet both legal and technical requirements. For example, you accompany urban planning procedures, approval processes or ensure the operational safety of our infrastructure services.
  • You can implement your ideas at companies in the construction and infrastructure sectors, consulting firms, municipal enterprises such as public utilities or transport companies, but also in information technology start-ups, for example.
  • You will develop solutions for cities and regions in Europe, but also for the fast-growing megacities. In doing so, you will learn to work in a local environment with different cultural backgrounds around the world.
  • You will develop infrastructure systems independently and systematically in small teams, from the vision to the concrete implementation concept. You will apply comprehensive specialist knowledge, agile project management approaches and scientific methods. You learn how to present your ideas and lead them to implementation.
