Profile

Ensure new construction and maintenance of structures

The design and calculation of structures are an essential focus of the degree programme. This is done on the basis of mathematical-technical and scientific knowledge and methods. They are used, for example, in the planning of load-bearing structures, the selection of building materials and the dimensioning of components, the determination of the load-bearing capacity of the building ground or those measures that become necessary in the meantime during the construction of buildings.

Apart from the construction disciplines, construction management is another focus. This involves planning and managing the implementation of construction projects. This concerns the selection of construction methods, the economic efficiency in the planning and execution of construction work, as well as the cooperation with all planners and the contractors directly on the construction site in compliance with all legal regulations. In addition to new construction, the preservation of buildings and building in the existing fabric is of great importance.

Is this degree programme right for me?

The high level of practical relevance of the dualdegree programme in civil engineering allows you to enter the professional world at an early stage. You can apply what you have learned in theory directly at one of the cooperating practical sites. The parallel study and practice requires good organisation and communication skills. At the same time, the digital orientation of the degree programme allows you a lot of flexibility and you are in constant exchange with the lecturers.

You bring these qualities with you

  • Interest in construction processes and structures
  • High mathematical, physical and technical understanding
  • IT affinity and an openness towards digital solutions
  • Problem solving skills
  • Organisational skills
  • Independent working style
  • Teamwork and communication skills

Career prospects

Career prospects

Civil engineers are sought-after specialists with a high level of responsibility. Therefore, career starters are offered very good prospects upon successful completion of the degree programme. You will already grow into your practical company during the dual study programme, which gives you many opportunities both there and on the labour market.

Civil engineers can choose to become self-employed, for example with an engineering office, or you can opt for employment in a company in the construction industry, the building trade, project management or similar. A subsequent Master's degree is also possible.

Possible areas of application

  • Road construction company
  • Building construction and civil engineering companies
  • Construction planning departments
  • Construction management
  • Property developers
  • Building materials industry
  • Architect's office
  • Distribution
  • Manufacturers of building products
  • Development departments
  • Public administrations
  • Consultancy and expert opinions
  • Facility management etc.

Prepared for the world of work

The civil engineering degree programme prepares you to competently handle the following situations:

  • You will accompany the construction of a new building as well as construction measures on existing buildings from the first sketch to completion, e.g. the construction of a factory building, the conversion and modernisation of a residential building or the maintenance of a railway bridge.
  • To do this, you design, construct and calculate the individual parts of the structure from the foundation to the roof. You decide on the construction method, select the building elements and the suitable materials such as steel, wood, masonry or concrete.
  • You ensure that the structure meets both legal and technical requirements. For example, you accompany the approval procedure and ensure stability as well as compliance with the current requirements for energy efficiency and emission protection.
  • You plan and control the execution of construction projects in the office and on the construction site. In dialogue with architects, specialist planners, building owners and the companies carrying out the work, you ensure the completion of the building project with regard to time, costs and quality.
  • You work on technical problems independently and systematically in a team as well as individually on the basis of scientific working methods. In doing so, you apply your knowledge and skills, e.g. in the use of specialised software, and expand your knowledge as required. You support decision-making processes, e.g. through reports and presentations.

Study content

Course of studies

The standard period of study for the full-time civil engineering degree programme is eight semesters and concludes with a Bachelor of Engineering degree.

In the dual Bachelor's programme in civil engineering, university semesters alternate with practical phases and semesters that are completed at the training partner. The theoretical and practical phases are coordinated with each other in terms of content. Students are therefore bound to the course of study according to the standard curriculum. This consists of compulsory modules in structural engineering and infrastructure systems, compulsory elective modules and concludes with a Bachelor's thesis and its defence.

Semester 1 – 2

Compulsory modules, basic studies: Structural engineering, infrastructure systems
Practical periods

Semester 3 – 4 Compulsory modules, basic studies: structural engineering
Practical periods
Semester 5 Practical semester
Semester 6 – 7

Compulsory modules, in-depth studies, elective modules,
Practical periods

Semester 8 Practical semester,
Bachelor thesis and colloquium

Study content

During the first four semesters, students learn the technical and scientific basics of civil engineering. In the sixth and seventh semesters, the specialised knowledge is deepened and an individual focus is set through elective modules.

In the currently valid module handbooks and study and examination regulations of the civil engineering department you will find the module overview, a detailed description of the modules and study contents as well as the study plan for the dual degree programme in civil engineering.

Teaching formats

The theory semesters in the dual degreeprogramme civil engineering guarantee a theoretically sound and, through the choice of teaching formats, an equally practical study:

  • Lectures
  • Seminars
  • (Laboratory) exercises
  • Projects
  • Excursions
  • Tutorials

Modules

The content of the dual Bachelor's degree programme in Civil Engineering consists of general fundamentals, fundamentals of construction, content of structural engineering, construction management and law as well as infrastructure:

  • Mathematics, technical drawing, surveying, communication and scientific work, reflection on theory-practice transfer and course of study.
  • Statics, structural design, building materials, building physics

Application & Contact

Dates & requirements for your application

The most important deadlines, dates and admission requirements for the dual Bachelor's degree programme in civil engineering are compiled here. You can find out which steps you need to take for a successful application in the next section.

Dates

  • by 15 August: submit application for enrolment
  • by 15 July: apply for a higher semester to continue a degree programme you have started at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam

Access requirements

  • General higher education entrance qualification according to the Brandenburg university act: General higher education entrance qualification or entrance qualification for studies at universities of applied science or previous vocational training recognised as equivalent
  • Completed education contract with a recognised practice partner

This is how you apply!

In the following, we explain which aspects you should consider from the conclusion of an education contract to enrolment (registration).

In order to be able to submit an enrolment application, it is necessary to apply to a recognised practice partner and conclude an educational contract with them. This must be uploaded as a PDF during online enrolment.

You can find vacancies for dual study programmes for winter semester 2024/2025 under Vacancies at Practice Partners | Dual Degree Programme.

You can find a comprehensive list of all partner companies under Practice Partner for the Civil Engineering | Dual Degree Programme.

Are you unsure whether you want to study dual or full-time? You can find help in deciding and further information on dual studies on the dual study website.

Do you have a university entrance qualification and have concluded an educational contract with one of the practice partners of the Bachelor's degree programme Civil Engineering | Dual? Then you have the opportunity to submit an enrolment application for the winter semester from 15 June to 15 August in the MyCampus university portal of the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam.

Once you have submitted your online application for enrolment, please submit the printed and signed application together with all required documents in paper form by the deadline. The day of the enrolment deadline is decisive for the submission of the documents, whereby the date of receipt by post at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam is decisive.

Documents to be submitted

  • officially certified copy of the university entrance qualification or the university degree certificate
  • Proof of health insurance coverage for students or proof of exemption from compulsory health insurance coverage
  • Proof of payment or order confirmation for semester fees
  • Photo for issuing the Campus.Card
  • If applicable, certificate of exmatriculation from the last university attended
  • If applicable, further documents according to the enrolment application form

Do you have questions about the enrolment process at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam? We have compiled frequently asked questions and answers regarding enrolment and admission.

Start your studies

After you have successfully completed the application process, we recommend that you take a look at the start of studies page of the civil engineering department. There you will find important information and dates regarding the start of your studies at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam.
